Kamala Harris has an artificial intelligence problem
The jokes seemed to write themselves last week after the Biden administration announced Vice President Kamala Harris, known for her vapid word salad speeches and obvious gaslighting, would now run point on artificial intelligence. Even I jumped in on the action, noting on FOX Business that Harris was more associated with the word "artificial" than the word "intelligence." All joking aside, the future of AI technology is a serious issue. With her approval ratings in the toilet and President Biden showing obvious signs of age-related decline, Kamala Harris (and by that I mean the Democratic Party) urgently needs a way to rehabilitate her historically unpopular image ahead of the 2024 presidential race. This is not the way. On this issue, like so many before it, Harris is out of her depth.
The NFL of e-sports? Blizzard wants to create 'Overwatch' league with city-specific video game fans
Blizzard Entertainment pioneered e-sports with its "Starcraft" franchise more than a decade ago. Now, with "Overwatch," the Irvine video game maker wants to bring to e-sports the wealth and recognition that sports such as soccer, football and basketball generate. To do so, Blizzard Entertainment, a division of Santa Monica's Activision Blizzard Inc., announced Friday it will adopt hallmarks of traditional sports leagues to form an e-sports league more instantly relatable than others spawned in the last few years. Blizzard envisions professional teams for the shooting game "Overwatch" based in a major cities worldwide. Players would be scouted and signed through free agency and receive guaranteed salaries and benefits.
Production problems with Hero5 camera briefly scare GoPro investors
Late-stage production problems with GoPro Inc.'s newest camera briefly caused the company's shares to falter. GoPro's stock dipped from $11.94 at close Thursday to as low as $9.90 Friday before rebounding to $11.15 around 11:30 a.m. "Demand is very strong," said Anthony Bates, GoPro's president. "We just can't catch up to the forecasted demand and that's what you see reflected." The waterproof camera, which costs $399, has voice control and ultra-high definition video quality.
Do you own the software that runs your Tesla?
When Tesla announced recently that it would make "full self-driving capability" available on new S and X models for a mere $3,000 extra, optimists hailed the development as a watershed moment for consumer technology. But embedded in the press release was a little-noted catch: While customers may use the self-driving feature to pick up friends or family members, "doing so for revenue purposes will only be permissible on the Tesla Network, details of which will be released next year." If you want to earn some extra money -- perhaps to help pay off your robot car's $75,000 price tag -- by selling rides to strangers, you won't be allowed to use Uber or Lyft. On its face, this demand may seem ridiculous. For over a century, buying a car meant that as soon as you left the lot, you could drive it wherever and however you liked as long as you obeyed traffic laws.
The Future of Machine Learning
I listened to this podcast on my drive to Michigan last Friday. If you like to think about the future, and where the puck is going, put your headphones on and listen critically. What is revealed is the way machine learning can be used to create biased and unbiased conclusions. It's always been known that if you start with the wrong hypothesis when using statistical analysis, you will reach a bad conclusion. There is a humorous blog, Spurious Correlations, that turns statistics on its head.
Pundits Vs. Machine: Predicting Controversies In The Presidential Race
Quid, a data analytics firm, uses proprietary software to search, visualize and analyze text. Quid, a data analytics firm, uses proprietary software to search, visualize and analyze text. Predictions are for psychics -- and in this very unpredictable political season they might do a better job than the pundits. I set out to see how well it could predict which controversies around the candidates were likely to re-emerge over the course of a month. And two human pundits have agreed to compete against the machine.
Google's search engine directs voters to the ballot box
Google is pulling another lever on its influential search engine in an effort to boost voter turnout in November's U.S. presidential election. Beginning Tuesday, Google will provide a summary box detailing state voting laws at the top of the search results whenever a user appears to be looking for that information. The breakdown will focus on the rules particular to the state where the search request originates unless a user asks for another location. Google is introducing the how-to-vote instructions a month after it unveiled a similar feature that explains how to register to vote in states across the U.S. The search giant said its campaign is driven by rabid public interest in the presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. As of last week, it said, the volume of search requests tied to the election, the candidates and key campaign issues had more than quadrupled compared to a similar point in the 2012 presidential race.
